Symlabs Press Release

Symlabs Introduces ID-WSF Access to Personal Health Records

Date: 06/13/2006
Author: Nathan T. Harper / Symlabs, Inc.
JUNE 13, 2006: Symlabs, the leader in ID Management standards beyond federated SSO, announces the Symlabs Federated Identity Access Manager (FIAM) Medical Information Gateway (MIG). Based on the Liberty ID Web Services Framework (IDWSF), Symlabs MIG enables Personal Health Record (PHR), Continuity of Care Record (CCR) and other regional and national health care records to be exchanged with strong consent of the patient - or in cases where the patient is unconscious, in a fully accountable way as requested by a registered, and therefore trustworthy, medical doctor.

Symlabs will demonstrate interoperability of its groundbreaking solution with MedCommons in the Liberty Alliance hospitality suite on Thursday, June 15th at the Burton Catalyst 2006 conference.

Single Sign-On web GUI solutions, which Symlabs also provides, offer a way to access this information from a patient's service provider (SP). However, a web services interface is more natural for doctors who want the information well integrated with the applications their hospitals or practices provide. In such a context, the Liberty Alliance Identity Web Services Framework (ID-WSF) provides an optimal way to convey identity based authorization and access to highly sensitive medical information.

Medical and healthcare information certainly qualify as privacy sensitive. Therefore it is necessary and appropriate that this information is protected to the highest possible standards: each and every access must be attributed to the identity of the party, usually a doctor, that needs such access. The healthcare information services should also support a distributed model so that each patient can use the repository of his or her choice.

"The Liberty Alliance identity management framework is ideally suited for the healthcare industry's information sharing needs. It has been designed from the ground up with security and accountability in mind, yet it provides a widely interoperable basis for expressing the identities needed for access control decisions. This provides the SSO convenience needed for practical deployments." - Sampo Kellomäki, Identity Architect, Symlabs

Symlabs Federated Identity Access Manager IdP, Medical Edition, is a standards conformant Identity Provider that authenticates a doctor and properly handles out-of-the-ordinary requests for access to medical information. Symlabs IdP Medical Edition enables "breaking the glass", i.e. extraordinary access to medical information even where the patient has not given a-priori consent. This authorization is strictly circumscribed by the requirement that the doctor's IdP vouches that the doctor is a duly authorized medical practitioner.

Symlabs Federated Identity Access Manager Medical Information Gateway provides a web services interface to a patient's Personal Health Record and Continuity of Care Record. It also supports the same ID-WSF standards that enable the Symlabs FIAM IdP, Medical Edition, to support extraordinary authorized access in emergency situations. Symlabs MIG interoperates with the MedCommons CXP service, thus offering ID-CXP service to a Liberty enabled community.

Symlabs IdP Medical Edition is currently deployed by major healthcare organizations as a means of registering doctors for both routine daily access and for emergency access. Symlabs MIG is deployed by the patient's choice of medical information providers. As the technology grows and a competitive market develops, the number of these providers will likewise increase.
