Symlabs Press Release

Symlabs Brings First People Service Product to Market

Date: 06/12/2006
Author: Nathan T. Harper / Symlabs, Inc.
JUNE 13, 2006: Symlabs, a leader in ID Management standards beyond federated SSO, announces general availability of its Federated Identity Access Manager (FIAM) People Service server. The product is Based on the Liberty Alliance People Service and the ID Web Services Framework (ID-WSF) version 2.0 draft specifications. These specifications are currently available for public review and are due for final release in late summer 2006.

Symlabs will demonstrate interoperability of its solution with NTT in the Liberty Alliance hospitality suite on Thursday, June 15th at the Burton Catalyst 2006 conference.

The People Service is the first identity and web services based solution that allows users to store and manage their social network - buddy lists, groups, and friends - on the network. This ability brings significant advantages:

- The network only need be built once

- It can be leveraged towards several different services such as photo albums, calendars, business contact networks and reputation services

- User has a choice of provider and gains better control over how his or her social network is used

- Lock in fears are reduced

- Unleashes tremendous user potential and will take social networks beyond the early adopter stage

People Service server will be deployed by all significant consumer organizations and service providers on the Internet. A mobile operator or a major Internet service provider will want to complement its consumer service offering to add more value to the customer relationship. Large service providers will want to leverage the social networks to provide novel services and to better target existing services.

"Liberty Alliance has leap frogged other identity standards in providing an actionable and immediately implementable identity management framework. It addresses, beyond federated single sign-on, the issues of identity based web services and in particular the way a principal can call the web services of another principal. The People Service, combined with ID-WSF 2.0 will revolutionize the way identity is managed both in the intranet and the extranet." - Sampo Kellomäki, Identity Architect, Symlabs

Version 2.0 of the Liberty Alliance ID-WSF specification is an ideal complement to the People Service by enabling a user to access web sites and service providers of his or her friends. For example, a user could share her photo album with friends without requiring her friends to first become customers of the photo album service. Symlabs FIAM People Service facilitates such sharing by ensuring that it occurs only with proper authorization and identity credentials in the form of digitally signed SAML assertions. With its ability to remove such obstacles to end-user adoption, Symlabs' People Service Server will help usher in a new era of far-reaching social networks.

Symlabs' ID-WSF 2.0 and People Service solution facilitates several enterprise and e-government use cases. For example, a company that outsources its accounting can authorize a clerk of the accounting firm to make tax form submissions on its behalf by registering the clerk in the proper role using the enterprise edition of Symlabs' FIAM People Service. When a submission is made, the government can discern from the digitally signed SAML credential what the clerk's identity is and that she was duly authorized to submit declarations on behalf of the company. The company benefits from greater protection against fraudulent submissions and better automation. The government gains better nonrepudiatability and also better automation.
