Sun OpenDS

Sun Open
DS is an open source community
project building a free and comprehensive
next generation directory service,
based on LDAP and DSML standards. Sun Open
DS is a popular LDAPv3 compliant directory server with multi-master replication, an advanced command line interface and a graphical user interface, can be installed and configured in around three minutes. The ease with which this LDAP server can be set up, makes it a popular choice for enterprises that are comfortable working with Open Source Software.
Symlabs performs a fair amount of testing and demonstration work using Sun OpenDS as a backend repository, since it is relatively easy to set up and configure for any Operating System. As a result, we have simulated a large number of customer issues using OpenDS as an example backend. Furthermore, as a free and open source application, we have been able to use OpenDS to illustrate how it is possible to cheaply build a persistent cache of virtual data-views processed within Symlabs Virtual Directory Server and LDAP Proxy. If you are exploring this as an option, it is better to make use of a directory that has excellent performance and simple configuration options, than to use a 'built-in' facility that is completely reliant on your Virtual Directory software and that may not be built with real performance in mind.
